Sabo Browser

The human brain is an amazing organ. As many of you may remember, in addition to insulating your skull, it can make decisions. Sabo Browser was purpose built for just this capacity. It has no AI in it and it does its best to block AI overviews. It’s very inconvenient. Your brain will love it.

Plants as Liberation: Hilton Carter

Posted in History & People on October 3, 2024, by Cosette Patterson

Hilton Carter and Arvolyn Hill in the Forest at NYBG

We’re back with another Plants as Liberation talk, where Arvolyn Hill, Manager of the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, interviews BIPOC herbalists, houseplant enthusiasts, farmers, and gardeners to learn how they’re using plants as powerful means of expression.

In this video, she speaks with plant and interior stylist, best-selling author, and artist Hilton Carter. With the backdrop of NYBG’s lush Azalea Garden and verdant Forest to set the tone, they discuss Carter’s love for houseplants, how this passion started, and why cultivating a connection with living things—and fostering their growth—is so important to his personal life.

It refuses first, and then it says who.

The blocklist ships inside the browser: 5,083 hosts and 1,597 named companies, every claim sourced to what the company says about itself. Nothing is fetched to decide. The decision is made before the request leaves.

On the Mac, the bot beside the address is the meter. Click it and the reading is there: a number out of 100, the names behind it, and what each of them could still do once you have gone.

Marginalia

Notes in the margin, not in a filing system.

Select a paragraph, right-click, Add to Marginalia. If the page was not bookmarked, it is bookmarked on the way past. The margin stands beside the page rather than over it, so you read and write at the same time.

A note is text and a date. Not a highlight, not an anchor into a page you do not control: a quotation is still a quotation after the page it came from has gone.

The gripes

The Most Annoying Browser on the Market

First, it remembers almost nothing. At the top of the list of inconveniences, it will not remember your passwords or credit card information. It may force you to skip things like signing in and buying stuff.

Other stuff it won’t do:

  • It will not fill in a form.
  • It will not sync with anything, especially your work tabs.
  • It will not summarize the page, write your email, or click around the web on your behalf.
  • It will not send or receive notifications. You won’t notice.
  • No telemetry, no auto-updater. When there is a new version, you return here like a Salmon.
  • It will not ask to be your default browser because it has basic self respect.
